Ca fait maintenant quelques années que je tourne autour de l'idée de travailler sur le thème de l'esclavage. Ecrire et.ou dessiner une histoire sur ce qui s'est passé dans les Antilles-Guyane, ou dans le Sud des Etats-Unis...
Un journal m'avait confié en 2021 une reconstitution historique d'un village d'esclaves de Guyane, sous forme d'illustrations, avec deux archéologues. Cette demande était venue renforcée l'idée de travailler là dessus.
Les hasards de la vie ont fait qu'on m'a confié au même moment un travail de scénario et de dessin sur Pauline Villeneuve, ancienne esclave de Guadeloupe qui a été affranchie à Nantes en 1715 à cause d'une faille juridique, en accompagnant sa "propriétaire" en Métropole. Un procès avait fait grand bruit, mais l'histoire de Pauline est très peu connue, et je vous invite à aller vous renseigner sur son parcours incroyable.
D'autres hasards de la vie ont fait qu'au moment où j'ai terminé d'écrire le scénario et où je le peaufinais, on m'a annoncé que le projet était annulé et que je ne pouvais pas parler librement de ce personnage (cynique, n'est-il pas ?)
Dans le scénario que j'avais prévu, sur une case, l'héroïne se tenait devant un papier peint représentant des fleurs et des oiseaux exotiques. J'avais envie d'essayer d'en faire une belle image assez détaillée.
...le projet BD est stoppée, mais j'ai décidé de représenter au moins l'idée de cette case, sans en nommer le personnage principal.
L'illustration s'appelle "Affranchie."

For several years now, I've been toying with the idea of working on the theme of slavery. Writing and/or drawing a story about what happened in the French West Indies and French Guiana, or in the South of USA...
In 2021, a newspaper commissioned me to illustrate a historical reconstruction of a slave village in French Guiana, in collaboration with two archaeologists. This request reinforced the idea of working on it.
Very recently, I had resumed my research in earnest.
As luck would have it, at the same time I was given a script and drawing assignment on Pauline Villeneuve, a former slave from Guadeloupe who was freed in Nantes in 1715 because of a legal loophole, accompanying her “owner” to Metropolitan France. Pauline's story is little-known, and I invite you to find out more about her incredible story.
As fate would have it, just as I finished writing the script and was putting the finishing touches to it, I was told that the project was cancelled and that I couldn't speak freely about this character (cynical, isn't he?).
In the scenario I had planned, the heroine stood in front of a wallpaper depicting flowers and exotic birds. I wanted to try and make a nice, detailed picture of it.
...the comic project was stopped, but I decided to represent at least the idea of this square, without naming the main character.
The illustration is called “Affranchie” (meaning “freed slave”).
